What is a Marketing Campaign

According to Entrepreneur, a marketing campaign is “a specific, defined series of activities used in marketing a new or changed product or service, or in using new marketing channels and methods.” While the definition of a marketing campaign may be straightforward, there are a number of elements needed to make each campaign a successful one that some may not be aware of.

Define your purpose

Before you run any marketing campaign, you need to identify its purpose. Knowing why you are running the campaign helps you develop the goals you are looking to achieve. To ensure that the goals set are realistic, it’s important to make sure they are SMART goals. SMART goals are specific, measurable, attainable, relevant and time-based. Goals, based on this foundation, help you determine what success looks like for your campaign.

Define your audience

It is so important to understand who your campaign is for. Knowing who your target audience is will heavily influence what your message is and the way you word it.  Your audience will also help determine the channels you’ll utilize to distribute that message. Below are a few examples of questions many marketers ask to better define their target audience:

  • What is my target demographic?
  • How do they communicate?
  • Where does my audience spend their time online? What are they looking for on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter ect.
  • What is the best way to reach them?

Define your strategy

Strategy can be vital when executing a marketing campaign. Successful campaigns have timelines in place from the very beginning and they are followed meticulously. This is meant to keep you on track throughout the entire process. Defining a campaign’s strategy also gives you an opportunity to better understand and utilize specific channels to get your message across.
