Have you heard? Facebook is getting ready to introduce new apps on its platform. Facebook announced this week that they have created a team called the New Product Experimentation (NPE). The purpose of this group is to design, build and launch apps that give users “entirely new experiences for building community.”

Over the last couple of years, Facebook has been working to rectify a number of problems including privacy/security issues and lack of youth involvement. Many believe that these issues have inspired the platform to create the NPE team as a clear effort to branch out from social media. Aside from the Messenger app, these new apps will be Facebook’s first attempt to do so.

Facebook encourages the New Product Experimentation team to be creative and think outside of the box. This gives the NPE team a sense of freedom and the ability to alter apps or even shut them down if they don’t meet user expectations.

The apps in question can range from games to business tools and will include the creator’s name, “NPE Team from Facebook.” Facebook’s shared that the new apps are expected to enter Apple’s App Store, Google Play store, and the web within the next couple of weeks.

However, these new NPE apps may not be available worldwide. According to Facebook, some apps may only be available in certain countries. There’s currently no indication of how large the NPE team will be. “Oftentimes starting small is the best way to make the biggest discoveries,” Facebook said about the NPE Team. “We believe building without fear of failure is the only way to achieve success.” The team includes smaller groups of engineers, designers, and product managers. All will be overseen by Facebook Chief Technology Officer Mike Schroepfer.
