According to the World Health Organization, every 40 seconds someone loses their life to suicide. Today, which is World Mental Health Day 2019, the WHO is focusing on “40 seconds of action” to raise awareness of the scale of suicide around the world and role that each of us can play to help people at risk.

They are focusing on the fact that just reaching out and talking to someone can be the difference for someone who is struggling with mental health issues. Please watch the video below from the World Health Organizations website.

This week on Digital Dialogue we talked about time management and how to deal with the stresses of every day work life and how stress is the number one cause of why your work day might go off the tracks.

In the Ted Talk, How To Make Stress Your Friend, “Psychologist Kelly McGonigal urges us to see stress as a positive, and introduces us to an unsung mechanism for stress reduction: reaching out to others.”

health psychologist Kelly McGonigal identifies how you can, in fact, embrace work related stress and gain courage from it, instead of it becoming your enemy.

In her words: “The old understanding of stress as an unhelpful relic of our animal instincts is being replaced by the understanding that stress actually makes us socially smart — it’s what allows us to be fully human.” It’s an extremely important talk because as a whole Americans spend a lot time at our respective jobs.

It has been calculated by Gettysburg College, that the average person spends 1/3 of their life at work. Therefore it’s necessary to have a healthy work/life balance and use any resources available to you to keep your mind fresh. Find any advantage you can in scheduling your day and make sure you use your time well but not at the expense of your mental health.
