Okay, real talk. Work can, at times, be stressful. If it wasn’t, it probably wouldn’t be called work. Not to mention, we end up spending A LOT of time at our respective jobs. It has been calculated by Gettysburg College, that the average person spends 1/3 of their life at work. In light of this (mindblowing) statistic and the fact that today is National Relaxation Day, here are four simple ways to help you relax more in the workplace.

1).  Create a “Happy” Workspace

Throughout the day, a ton of stuff can accumulate on one’s desk. Take the time to de-clutter it! By minimizing the obvious distractions, you are creating a more peaceful work environment. Now take note, de-clutter does not mean sterile. Your desk is basically your home away from home, so decorate it. Maybe with a picture of your pet or a nice little succulent plant. Use anything that makes you smile, because when you’re happy you’re less stressed and more productive.

2).  Stay Active

We’ve all been there. You look at the clock and realize you’ve been sitting at your desk in the same position for the past five hours. Well, studies have shown that excessive sitting can actually lead to a variety of health issues. That is why it is so important to give yourself multiple small breaks throughout the day. So whether it’s going for a walk outside or just to the office’s water cooler (we all know how important it is to stay hydrated) get up and move! Another great tip would be to look into a standing desk. Practically everyone in our office has one and they are the BEST!

3). Meditate

This doesn’t have to be an hour-long event that involves yoga mats. Just close your eyes, and take deep breaths. As you focus on your breathing, allow yourself to re-center. Hopefully, this will help you gain perspective and feel less stressed then when you started. A few minutes of this can go a long way.

4). Prioritize

A lot of the time stress stems from being overwhelmed. To avoid this, start every morning by making a to-do list. Unfortunately, there are never enough hours in the day and you cannot be everything to everyone. Put your main priorities at the top of your list and cross them off as you complete them. Having that as a visual and allowing yourself to celebrate the accomplishment will definitely cut back on the stress you are experiencing.
